Surgical Breast Injuries in Jacksonville FL

There is a certain amount of risk associated with any surgery. Unfortunately, the risk increases if the surgery is performed by an unskilled surgeon with limited experience or a provider who schedules multiple back-to-back procedures.  Many breast augmentations are conducted under the least desirable conditions, meaning they are performed by surgeons who lack the skill and extensive training to perform this type of surgical procedure. It is important to understand first-hand what might go wrong so qualified cosmetic surgeons find it important to educate patients on any complications possible during or after plastic surgery procedures.

Chris Shakib is a very experienced cosmetic surgery injury attorney handling every type of breast procedure mishap that can take place. It is important for our clients to understand the medical issues, risks, and complications that can arise from a botched cosmetic surgical procedure involving the breasts.

Breast surgery complications can range from patient complications that occur during the surgery, to breast complications that develop while recovering from breast surgery. We believe it is important to understand what complications may occur during surgery and afterward. Certain breast surgeries can compromise blood flow to the breast tissue, including nipple-areola complexes. It is imperative for the surgeon to look for vascular congestion.

  • Hematoma/Seroma:

Although rare in most surgical procedures, blood can collect in small cavities. This happens shortly after surgery. The body can reabsorb small blood collections, but larger pools of blood can cause injuries if the blood is not drained properly.

  • Infection:

Infections can be common if the medical facility or surgical unit does not maintain proper sanitary conditions and ensure sterilized instruments are used and handled properly. After surgery, patients should be prescribed the appropriate antibiotics to handle any infections. Some infections can become so significant that the breast implants may require removal and replacement.

  • Necrosis:

Necrosis is the medical term for the death of body tissue, which can occur in many different areas of the body, including bones, skin, and organs. It happens when cells in the tissue die due to a lack of blood flow. Necrosis is irreversible once confirmed.  The most significant risk of necrosis is that a woman could lose breast tissue, including her nipples.

  • Reaction to Anesthesia

In some cases, patients can experience a negative reaction to anesthesia. Experienced cosmetic surgeons will perform an informative consultation where they educate their patients on every aspect of their breast surgery. This should include a thorough pre-op examination and review of the patient’s medical history. The patient should be monitored by an experienced anesthesiologist throughout the procedure and be performed in a well-equipped surgical unit, staffed by trained medical personnel. If a surgical patient is allergic to certain types of anesthesia the patient may experience an anaphylactic shock which can cause cardiovascular collapse, airway obstruction, flushing, edema of the skin, stroke, and even in rare cases death.

Injured By a Plastic or Cosmetic Surgeon?

If you or a loved one have been injured due to a botched cosmetic surgery procedure, contact Chris Shakib today for a free consultation. We have recovered millions for patients who have been severely injured due to negligent plastic surgeons.

Breast Surgery Complications

Choosing the right cosmetic surgeon is essential in avoiding breast revision surgery. These types of complications can arise due to multiple factors, including but not limited to, the surgical experience of the cosmetic surgeon, and the required surgical technique chosen by the cosmetic surgeon and the surgical facility in which he or she practices.

For over 28 years, Chris has dedicated his legal practice to assisting injured victims in receiving financial compensation for injuries sustained by the negligence of others. Medical practitioners have a responsibility to their patients and the public at large to provide quality care over increased profits. There are no safe shortcuts when it comes to providing effective quality medical care, especially during elective cosmetic surgical procedures. Improperly performed cosmetic surgeries are one of the most egregious, and life-altering exposures one can undergo, especially from a trusted source like a doctor.

Chris has helped hundreds of clients damaged by poorly performed cosmetic surgical procedures.  Although case outcomes are not guaranteed, Chris has been successful in recovering millions of dollars in compensation for injured clients. Elective cosmetic procedures are not cheap and are not covered by health insurance. Imagine investing your hard-earned money into a medical procedure you finally dare to undergo to enhance your appearance or correct a medical condition, only to endure physical complications and mental anguish because of an inexperienced, unskilled, and unqualified cosmetic surgeon.

These reasons are why Chris fights for his clients and has received many successful outcomes. Each case is reviewed on an individual basis, and case outcomes are not guaranteed.

The following is a list of breast surgery complications that can develop after surgery performed by an unskilled surgeon and may require breast revision surgery to remedy.

Capsular Contracture

Capsular contracture can occur due to several factors, including bacterial contamination. This can lead to many complications, including scar tissue forming around the breast implant. This hardening causes the breast to look and feel unnaturally hard. Unfortunately, breast revision surgery is usually required to help soften the effects of capsular contracture.

“Double Bubble”

This condition refers to a situation in which, after breast augmentation surgery, the breast does not mold around the breast implant. This causes the implant to descend below the natural crease of the breast. This separation between the bottom edge of the implant and the bottom edge of the natural breast brings about a visible line along the bottom of the breast. This can also exist in surgical procedures where the implant is placed under the chest muscle, giving the appearance of what looks like multiple sets of breasts. Again, revisionary surgery is required to reverse these complications.

Breast Cancer Screening and Mammographic Exam

Breast implants make it harder to detect cancerous tumors. Women should be required by their surgeon to obtain a mammogram before their breast augmentation. This medical protocol is an important step in reducing the risks of an unidentified cancerous tumor.

Asymmetry

If the cosmetic surgeon is not skilled and experienced in specific surgical techniques, there is a possibility for asymmetry (where one breast is of a different size, shape, position, or volume) than the other breast, and it too, can become more pronounced after breast augmentations, lifts, and breast reductions. This may require additional breast revision surgeries to correct.

Breast Implant Leakage, Rupture, Ripple, or Shift

Breast implants, if improperly manufactured, damaged, or compromised before surgery can cause physical trauma and can rupture, leak, ripple, or shift causing breasts to look unnatural. This is a preventable occurrence if the cosmetic surgeon ensures the prosthesis is undamaged or properly implanted during surgery.  A breast implant can be repaired through breast revision surgery if physical trauma occurs.

Diminished Nipple or Breast Sensation

Many patients report nipple or breast sensation loss after breast augmentation surgery. This sensation loss is usually temporary but can become permanent and is not solved with breast revision surgery.
